Visual Decay

Part one of the my project is about use of data. This idea plays with the idea of what you look at decaying a picture. I have animations of decays and end result images, this is the first one.

The right image I textured and filtered the dot data. The other I removed the dots to reveal a image underneath. Pretty much decided I like the left image result.

Logo design

Logo design, outline is good but the coloring and effects still need to be worked out.

Eye tracking hardware design

Began design on hardware of eye tracking camera using DIY instructions from eye writer. The tutorial was great so it went smoothly. I'm waiting on a 8mm lens to arrive in the mail, once that's in the hardware will be complete.

Web cam tracking

Using a web cam I track eye of user. Unlike most eye tracking software, an object tracker such as this can only track one object at a time. Although it's not specifically tracking both eyes, it presents an idea of a someone moving and interacting with a screen in order to view a image. This week I'll be purchasing a night vision web camera, which enable me to use real eye tracking software.

Automate worm file

Exported each frame of the worms .txt processing file. Applied glass mirror filter on Photoshop and automated all files. Came up with this version , I'm going to make a lot more till I decide which ones to keep for an animation.

Eye Animation

Constructed a eye animation rough draft for logo. Uses six .txt files, I plan on making a couple versions of it. Once I find one I like I'll have processing export each frame as a jpg, allowing me to build it in final cut.

Ten worms

I've programmed this processing file to run ten worms all following separate x and y coordinates from .txt files. I hope to improve aesthetics of worms and have them leave trails behind them. I'm working on two trail types, one is text characters, the other pixel gradation.v

Processing libraries

Three processing libraries I recently took interest in.

ImageAdjuster allows more pixel and image based functions be called.

TuioZones is great for touch and tracking systems

MovingLetters allows animation to be added to text

Vmouse software

vmouse software can allow a user to control a mouse by hand or some cases the eye. I'll be looking into this software to see if it would possible to get head movement data along with eye tracking.

Two X and Y files

Created a processing file that reads two separate text files containing different x and y positions. I plan to make a file that contains over 20 text files.

Mouse track beta complete

This processing file records mouse X, mouse Y and mouse clicks. The recordings are read and saved in a separate text file. Those files will be used to form character strings in a separate processing file. The next phase is to display separate images on a ten second timer and creating a new files with every image switch.

Project Outline

Matthew Pfliiger
4/7/10 S10

Using eye tracking technology to record twenty users looking at four pictures. All pictures will be timed from three to ten seconds. First picture will be timed at ten seconds and the last picture will be at three. I will be tracking the x and y positions of the mouse, including clicks. Once user is finished all x and y coordinates will be dated in a separate text file. Data will be connected to character strings and used in another processing file. This file will take the data and present an animation of all eye movements. I will also have the file export every frame as a jpeg, and construct all animations in a video editing program.

Once animations are complete I hope to present each user with there animation. While presenting I will be asking a series of questions about there eye movements. Audio recordings will be taking place during interview, and provide sound to animations later.

The advantage of using processing over flash is data control. I can produce several different animations of any one or multiple data string. This will allow me to design animations according each users unique information.
A website for the project will have each users bio, pictures, recorded video of eye tracking, animations and data coordinates. The site will also feature a DIY section, this section will explain how to use the data coordinates in processing. I hope that people will use data and send me animations and pictures they made with a certain users coordinate types.

Project weekly outline

Week 2 - Research processing functions, create two beta files. One will record mouse x and y coordinates to a separate text file. The second will take coordinates from text file and create animations.

Week 3 - Create 1.0 version of two betas.

Week 4 - Test 1.0 file in eye tracking lab. If testing goes poorly create 2.0. Begin signing people to participate in tests for next two weeks.

Week 5 - Begin testing, begin theme and vector designs for website.

Week 6 - Finish testing, themes and vector designs.

Week 7 - Begin website beta, organize all users, edit videos.

Week 8 - Finish website and put on internet, Organize chapter for class.
